Stangl, Franz
1908–1971
   Stangl was Commandant of the Treblinka death camp situated near Warsaw. All those who were sent there were exterminated: only 40 people were known to have survived. At one point Treblinka received 1000 Jews a day, many of them from as far afield as Holland and Belgium. A total of 700,000 were murdered there. At the end of the war the Germans attempted to destroy all trace of Treblinka by demolishing the camp and sending the SS guards to die in Yugoslavia fighting partisans. Stangl managed to survive and return to Austria where he was arrested by the Americans who had no knowledge of his past career. He was turned over to Austrian authorities but managed to escape to South America.
